One of my biggest articles in the past few months was “Is the Xbox Series S more powerful than the Xbox One X?” And in many ways, Microsoft did not answer this question concisely when the Xbox Series S was released last year. The internal structure between the two devices is very different. The previous generation One X has a greater potential for original graphics, while the S series has a modern CPU, and because of the use of SSD, the loading speed is faster.
Due to RAM, the biggest flaw of Xbox Series S is that it relies on the Xbox One S version that is backward compatible with the game, not the Xbox One X version. As a result, many older games, or games that were not natively made for the current generation of Xbox Series X and Series S consoles, look a bit bad. However, after more than half a year, the situation began to change.
More and more games are providing native enhanced versions for the current generation of consoles, which makes people pay attention to the true power of Xbox Series S. Crucially, it also highlights the value of this thing, its cost is lower than Nintendo Switch OLED, while pushing Halo Infinite and other games all the way to 120 FPS, while the former often struggles at 30 FPS.
As we move away from the previous generation, it is clear that the Xbox Series S, which is underestimated by many people, is becoming an important competitor.
In the past few weeks, I have used Xbox Series S as my main game console, and my personal experience is a bit complicated, at least from the beginning. Many of the games I tried from the beginning were not currently enhanced and usually run at 1080p resolution with a fixed frame rate of 30 FPS. For example, Cyberpunk 2077 looks really scary next to its X-series version. Even some Xbox Series S enhanced games are not completely perfect, standing in the shadow of the more powerful Xbox Series X. Gradually, this situation began to change significantly.
More and more studios are beginning to strengthen and re-evaluate their Xbox Series S peers. For example, Knight 2 is my current preferred multiplayer competitive game. I was disappointed to find that the S series version runs at a negligible 30 FPS on the console, which is a bit problematic considering the game’s reactive melee combat. But to my delight, Torn Banner returned and increased the game to 60 FPS, making it highly comparable to the high-resolution cousins of the X series.
Many of the largest multiplayer games, such as Destiny 2 and Fortnite, can enjoy 120 FPS mode on Xbox Series S. We provide here a complete list of games that support 120 FPS on Xbox Series S and X, and it has been growing. However, this is not only related to the frame rate.
I also recently reviewed The Ascent on Xbox Series S and tested it with the PC version running on RTX 2070. I am fascinated by the visual quality of the Series S and found that honestly, The Ascent is probably the best-looking game I have seen on any new generation console so far. Dozens of NPCs on the screen have high-fidelity assets, dense environmental details, and truly stunning lighting-The Ascent performed well in the face of criticism from Xbox Series S, proving that you can bring the next generation experience to the previous generation price point . Other games such as Microsoft Flight Simulator and Gears 5 have definitely soared on Series S, demonstrating the fact that the console can produce high-fidelity visual effects, not just increase the frame rate. The output resolution of Xbox Series S is usually higher than 1080p, allowing you to experience 4K at a lower price.
Xbox Series S confuses many commentators when it finally came to light, but it is still one of the smarter games Microsoft has made in this area in recent years.
Many people questioned Microsoft’s decision to release not one but two SKUs in this generation. We released exclusive information about Xbox Series S “Lockhart” more than a year before the release, but I remember a lot of professional analysis and armchair analysis claiming this is “impossible”. Alas, here we are. Not only is this not impossible, but it also helped Microsoft win some NPD victories in the US sales competition.
In some ways, the console industry has stagnated in terms of growth. Sales of PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch continue to remain healthy, but the growth rate is dwarfed by mobile devices, which allow people to easily access games on devices they already own. Console games will eventually encounter access problems, and Xbox Series S is definitely a console suitable for the current climate. Considering the global chip shortage, the situation is even more so-Xbox Series S is easier to manufacture than PS5 or Xbox Series X, which provides Microsoft with a potential quantitative advantage.
In the final analysis, competition with mobile devices is competition in access. Microsoft is actively trying to lower the barriers to entry into its ecosystem, both in terms of price and availability. The Xbox Series S has a prepaid fee of $300, and you can also split the cost through Xbox All Access. Thanks to Xbox Game Pass, it comes with hundreds of games.
Self-service is similar to mobile devices in that it allows users to eat grass and try many different games very quickly. Microsoft’s future addition of cloud streaming to bypass the installation time will also improve the experience of those who want immediate access-this factor may become more and more important as the younger generation explores outside the mobile phone space.
Features such as FPS Boost mean that Microsoft can also improve the quality of the previous generation of games without any input from developers. Using clever techniques and CPU overhead, Microsoft can unleash the potential of games such as “Dark Souls III” without the need for patches or updates, providing owners of previous generation consoles with an accessible upgrade path, even without a 4K TV It can also bring tangible benefits. Microsoft’s forward smart delivery feature can also ensure that gamers always get the best version of the game for their console, without having to figure out which separate versions they need to buy (at least, if you are not buying the game from a bad company). Just like Activision abuses the system for profit).
On the surface, it is difficult to deny the value of Xbox Series S, and this value will only increase over time.
As more and more games abandon the previous generation of consoles and switch to the native Xbox Series X|S version, the overall value of the console has also increased. For example, the remake of “Dead Space” was announced as a next-generation work only. FPS Boost continues to provide real-world benefits to classic previous-generation games, and Xbox Game Pass continues to be a top-notch service for console games.
I currently have a 4K TV, but I missed the sharp resolution provided by Xbox Series X. However, the “downgrade” is far less steep than the Xbox One era of consoles, it is difficult to reach 60 FPS in most games, and due to the long and slow loading time of its mechanical hard drive. The Xbox Series S is very impressive. I would basically recommend it to anyone who is looking for an Xbox Game Pass machine, a 1080p TV console, or especially those young people who don’t necessarily care about the millions of extra pixels. . Now and in the future, all the best Xbox games that will be launched may be enhanced.
As we go deeper into this generation, I am curious to know how good games will end up in this impressive little box. Can Microsoft use AI to create some kind of “resolution boost” similar to its FPS Boost feature? Will the developer tools and operating system build be improved to further increase efficiency? Does getting rid of the previous generation version help the studio to create a more optimized version? The answer to all of these may be yes, and Xbox Series S may benefit more than most people. Don’t underestimate the Xbox Series S; good things usually come in small packages.
Xbox Series X is Microsoft’s new flagship, as its most powerful host, with more than 12TF GPU performance and customized SSD. It has a resolution of up to 4K and 120 FPS, full backward compatibility across four generations, and ray tracing support.
Microsoft provides services to the next generation at a lower price through its budget-friendly Xbox Series S. The console uses the same high-performance CPU and SSD technology as the Xbox Series X, while reducing the GPU and removing the disk drive.
Xbox Game Pass continues to evolve as new games continue to join the service. Use our comprehensive guide to track all the information from Xbox Game Pass.
