PAMPORE: A shocking incident occurred in the Befina area of Pampore, Saffron Township, Pulwama District, southern Kashmir. A cow was electrocuted to death. Locals said the incident occurred on Sunday night when a cow passed through a residential area in Befina village, contacted the transformer and died on the spot. Residents in the Befina area claimed that the Power Development Department (PDD) installed the transformer close to the ground, posing a risk to their lives and property. Mehraj ud Din, a local in Befina village, told Kashmir Reader that the transformer was installed only 2 feet above the ground. He said: “The wires are easily touched by passers-by and pose a threat to our lives.” He added that for the safety of the villagers, they had called on PDD officials to install the transformer in a high place, but they ignored their request. He told Kashmiri readers, the previous Sunday night, a dairy cow was electrocuted after touching a wire hanging from a transformer. “I am a poor man with a daughter to take care of. Cows are the only source of income for my family. The negligence of the PDD officials took away my livelihood,” Ghulam Hassan Dar told Kashmir readers. Locals told Kashmir Reader that Dar had some health problems and he made a living by selling milk. They called on the authorities to compensate him for his loss and urged PDD officials to place the transformer at a safe height. Soon after the incident, a group of police officers from the Pampore police station came to the scene and took the necessary actions.
